Background story: This is a dress design developed for brand YERA where I was involved in the concept, design development and production stage.
Brief: I was tasked to produce a dress from concept, design to production.
Approach: I’ve personally developed the design of this dress, so I was very clear with what I need to complete this dress, so I started sourcing for the fabric, trimmings that I need for the design, and created a set of paper patterns to transfer the design onto the fabrics. After trimming the appliques and the dress patterns, I finished the edge of the fabric by using small flames to ensure the edge will not fray. And then I start to hand sewn all the appliques onto the bodice of the dress to ensure they are all in place before fixing them with machine. Finally I complete the dress by piecing the panels together and make sure I did a good job on all the finishings.
Challenge & Solution: The biggest challenge of this project was to make sure all the pieces are in place and does not stretch when being fixed onto the mesh by sewing machine. Any tension on the threads or unintentional stretch would destroy the surface and also the silhouette of the dress, so it has been a long process working on the front and back of the dress. Working on a mesh fabric without using any darts on the bust and hip area was also very challenging, because if the paper patterns are not well measured and well made, the dress will not be able to fit on the body well. But with a little bit more patience and steadily working through each step, the project managed to complete successfully.
